NDS Corp. (NNDS) discusses opportunities in Latin America, Italy and China (quotes from conf call)

Below are some comments from NDS Corp. (NNDS) from its February 1, 2005 conference call with investors.

On Latin America:

…been very strong in the last 2 quarters…we see a movement of customers from DirecTV Latin America to Sky Latin America. This is true in particular in Mexico and Brazil. ….there is no increase in the net subscribers…but there is a new set top box…new Smart Card etc.…I should also say that the platforms total has been growing. So Latin America is starting to look good again.

On Italy:

...It's kind of a really unique situation…in which the government subsidizes set top boxes so that the Pay TV operators can then use them to deploy pay services….[I] believe that the overall package, in which you get everything, and the convenience of having that package and the subscription will continue to drive the growth of Sky Italia. But remember that Sky Italia in Italy is still very under penetrated….and cable is almost non-existent in Italy.

On China:

….there are small deployments in the different provinces. There are indications that some of them are now talking about slightly larger Smart Card orders…… there's no question that there is a lot of activity, both among set top box manufacturers, about the pressure from the government to accelerate the deployment, because 2008 is actually starting to get closer.
